The Role of External Triggers in a BFRB

In therapy, we want to understand all of the internal cues and triggers that happen before as well as the reinforcing factors that happen after the pulling or picking episode. Internal triggers are things that happen outside of our body. External triggers can be motoric movements like stroking one's skin until you find something interesting. The use of tweezers, mirrors, especially magnifying mirrors, bright lights, anything that would be used or increase the likelihood that the behavior will happen is also important in therapy.
