Shostakovich's Signature
Shostakovich used this signature in many pieces, but this is the first time it appears in any of his symphonies. In contrast to the limping music of the opening, this theme to me is a little more confident. It's even a little brash and this may just be my take on it, but it even seems to be trying very hard to be seductive. The DSCH theme and the El Maratheme begin to interact until the music quite literally breaks down.
