ICP Control - Is Monitoring Crucial?

ICP stands for cerebral perfusion pressure, which is the pressure that maintains blood flow to the brain. Any intracranial pressure of greater than 20 millimeters of mercury that is sustained for greater than five minutes requires intervention. First tier therapy includes CSF drainage if the patient has an EVD, bolus or infusion of hypertonic saline as well as sedation, analgesia and even neuromuscular blockade. Second tier therapies are used for refractory intracranian hypertension in up to 40% of severe traumatic brain injury cases.
