Gnostics identified all the existing gods as basically the gods of our prison. So they see everything else that people had thought of as previously sacred, all the gods, as actually things imprisoning us. Instead of serving and fitting in, we have to transcend them all. They are not divine. They are prison guards. But instead what we need to realize is that there is something in us, a divine spark, that will actually carry us above to the God beyond all gods.
