In Our Time: Culture
Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde's novel Dorian Gray was one of the dominating texts at the time. The book explores dandyism in two forms: Lord Henry Wutton, who talks to talk; and Dorian Gray, who walks the walk. When it was first published in L'Himmincot's Monthly, there was a homoerotic subtext which he toned down for his liking. He knew what he was doing but had to tread that fine line because if this book is coerced to condemned by a Tory government, the public will no doubt rush to read it.
