The Importance of Religion in Coordination

During World War II, the Soviet Union was coordinated enough to sacrifice 13.7% of its population in a coordinated attempt to defeat Nazi Germany. Does anyone feel like we could achieve that level of coordination in modern America? It occurs to me that like many things, coordination may have a sweet spot. Too little and you create a fractured society of hundreds of ideological groups composed of perfectly coordinated individuals who refuse any level of coordination with other groups.
