In 19 57, representatives from six european countries gathered in rome to sign an important treaty. The founding nations were belgium, west germany, france, italy, luxembourg and the nether ance. Notably absent was the united kingdom - britain feared membership of a common market would have severe impact on the ucs commonwealth market. But as it became clear that the single market was helping its members economies to thrive, the u k was forced to think again. Britain needed this economic prosperity to make up for loss of productivity and poor economic growth in the 19 sixties.
