CHAPTER

Effective Altruism

The collapse of FTX is a vindication of the view that institutions, not individuals, must shoulder the job of keeping excessive risk-taking at bay. The metrics used by effective altruists are imperfect at best, and small errors can quickly snowball into huge consequences. Carla thinks homogeneity is the price they pay to escape the discomfort of an uncertain moral landscape. She's sympathetic to the type of greed that drives us beyond wanting to be good, to instead be certain that we are good. Most of us have it in us, she suspects.
