I think that with the consumer is trans people aren't just buying stuff they're also putting bricks in the wall of their own isolation. You can develop claustrophobia and all kinds of other kind of neurotic reactions to the absence of space, the spatial awareness in your life. I've done this many times and ended up throwing away things that I recall regretted, but it's a profound ritual. And you see it in other countries that have in some ways regretfully assimilated and appropriated American culture there.
