The Origins of Feudalism

Feudalism is basically a bond of service between a master and his retainers or tenants. King Edward III creates duchies for his sons, including one for the Duke of Lancaster. Richard II loses most of his territory in France, it's the final straw for many disaffected nobles. In 1399, while campaigning in Ireland, Richard II is deposed by his cousin Henry the Duke of Lancashire. As he becomes Henry IV, he is the first king of the House of Lancaster.
