Barry Marshall and H. pylori discovered that people who had their vagus nerve cut had a very significant reduction in risk for developing Parkinson's. The protein alpha-synuclein may come from the gut and travel up this vagus nerve getting its way into the brain which is one of the markers hallmarks of Parkinson's in the brain. So when you cut the highway and this protein couldn't make its way to the brain that might explain the reduction in risk of Parkinson's.
