David Wheeler: Occam's razor is the principle associated with a British scholastic of the 13th century. He says if you have 10 alternative ideas, they vary in the number of parameters, take the one with the fewest. We now call that model selection or regularization, but it's all the application of this notion, he says. Wheeler: I've been very interested in these sciences which move parsimony away from the primary object of scrutiny to a process which can generate arbitrarily complicated objects.
