We Don't Understand Friction at the Nano Scale

Friction is still incredibly complicated till a really difficult thing to fully capture and fully understand. We don't have a way to take what we know about friction at nano scale and use that to design better systems on the macro scale. This is pretty unusual in the worlds of material science. If we could get to a point where we, you know, could predict things like how high the friction is between two specific materials, we could design systems that could use fewer lubricants for example.
