The Social Contract in Hobbes
Most of the history of political philosophy has been based on notions like the social contract in Hobbes, for instance. It says if you want to do politics, don't make imaginary constructions about possible circumstances and imagine what people would do in those circumstances. You're never going to know whether what you observe around you is part of something that might be universal or whether it's actually just something accidental.
