The Wilderness Act and the Cross-Cut Saw
Cross-cuts first made a comeback because they had to. But now they're increasingly desirable, even in non-wilderness areas where chainsaws are technically allowed. With a lot of forested land seeing increasingly long fire seasons, some trail crews are finding that cross-cuts are just safer. A well-sharpened vintage cross-cut moves cleanly across the grain of a log, pulling out wood in a sort of noodle-like shape.
