The Earliest Evidence of Wildfire in Wales, 430 Million Years Ago

430 million years ago, when most complex life was the oceans. Only a few pioneering plants and animals had made it on to land. There were no woody plants at this time. Most of the vegetation was very small. But there was one giant that dwarfed the landscape. A fossil called proto taxites grew anything up to eight metrs in height and about a metre in diameter. And it's thought the best hypothesis is that this is some sort of fungi,. a humungus fungus, sumungus fungus indeed erect very pallic structures - pillars of fungus. absolutely pillars of fungus erupting on this landscape.
