A thorough sort of bathing in the scripture, so to speak, is just so incredibly helpful. And I think this is what Augustine does so impressively in the city of God. He's got such a command of the shape of the biblical star that he can bring it to bear really precisely on different things that he's seeing out there in the Roman world.
