Alcohest - The Universal Solvent

Van helmont claimed that he had been able to make alcohest. He never revealed his secret recipe. Many other scholars struggled in vain to discover van helmont's formula for the universal solvent. Some, at various points, believed they had found it. But i'm not sure exactly what he discovered, but do not think it was a real universal solvent.
