Constance baker motley often said that, if there had not been a thirgood marshal, no one ever would have heard of her. She worked at the n c p legal defence fund for 20 years,. including during her first trial, where she mitigated a teachers salary equalization case on behalf of black women teachers. In 19 61, marshall was leaving the legal defense fund, and there's a question about who should succeed him. And so this mentor who had made her career, who had hired her in 19 forty five, ended up denying her this job as director counsel in part because, in part, she was a woman.
