CHAPTER

Projective Identification in Group Therapy

Projective identification is an unconscious mental mechanism of defense. The person being projected into experiences himself as if the projection were part of him. A patient simply witnessing a therapist struggle to contain a painful feeling projected into him, without retaliating at the patient or withdrawing and feeling crushed may be enough to make the experience more bearable for the patient. Knowledge of the concept of p i is useful for understanding regressive phenomena driven by negative and intense adfects such as rage a. Therapists awareness of how to identify, understand and manage pi is crucial for overcoming what could otherwise become an impasse in group therapy nor individual therapy.
