Marriott Lane, Jones and Winston kept rehearsing. The name stuck because it had a double meaning. Face was mud slang for someone who was cool and respected on the mud scene. After a few pub gigs in London, they got some bookings in the north of England. They went down well at Peter Stringfellow's Mojo Club in Sheffield. But reports differ about their performance at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester. Some Mancunians borrowed their van and used it to rob a clothing warehouse. David Bowie and the Lower Third will be picking up that story in a little over a year from now.
