In the late 1100s and we're heading towards Jerusalem. Saladin was a Muslim warlord who led the enemy during the third crusade against the Christian forces. He was established as this hero, a gentleman, only doing good in victory and in defeat. All of that kind of behaviour was attributed to him - which is quite bizarre.
