Penitence and Shame

Shame is good insofar as it reveals a fact and then it motivates a response. If we become plunged in an ongoing contraction spiral of self-acculation, that sounds to me like the devil's work who is the accuser of all men. But if we recognize in it a kind of moral degradation, which is not in keeping with our dignity with our identity and mission as human beings and as Christians, I think that will ultimately have us before the Lord as beggars. The virtue of penitence sends us into the future with a deep desire to repent of what has been and to incline yet more perfectly to what could be in light of the grace of this present moment.
