The Importance of Diplomacy in the Taiwan Situation
Liu: Diplomacy is important for two reasons. One, if there's sufficient communication and negotiation with China, that could be a way to reach some kind of understanding which will be mutually beneficial in a conflict. Two, peace is really important, but not peace at any cost; we don't want a peace on the Nazi influence or Japanese imperial influence. And I think what Taiwan and possibly the West need to reflect on is whether it's even possible to maybe come with a new political foundation for cross-straits exchange. This should be under the agenda of think tanks and potentially political debate in Taiwan.
