What Is the Impact of the Mobile Internet in China?

In the years leading up to the olympics, a confluence of factors produced a phenomenon that none of us had really ever seen before. Ordinary chinese people were connecting with americans and others from the west for the first time,. at scale, without intermediation, totally unsupervised. This was possible first because of the surge, of course, in chinese aiernet users throughout the ats. But they happened also to really be the first generation or post eighties kids, mainly, who had taken compulsory english in school. They were profoundly curious about what people outside china were saying about them.
