The meanings of signs are situated in embodied experience, not general or decontextualized. Learners move back and forth between texts and embodied experiences. The learner understands texts as a family or genre of related texts but only after having achieved embodied understanding of some texts. Meaning and knowledge are built up through various modalities, such as images, words, symbols, interactions, abstract designs, sounds, and so on.
