The most common machine metaphors we use are those that reflect a human faculty for engineering. This says something about the type of society we've come to inhabit and the type of psychology that generates it. The biology that results from these tendencies can tend to be used to justify a worldview in which behavioral potentials are vastly more constrained than they actually are.
