The Importance of Mel Brooks in the Making of Blazing Saddles
Mel Brooks, he was just the right guy at the right time. The fact that it's a black sheriff and we can't underestimate the importance or the charge that that carried for the audience in 1974. Fred Williamson was starring in a bunch of spaghetti Westerns. He must have felt pretty overshadowed by this then. If you made this movie today, it would be. But I guess not in this particular Mad Magazine style.
