E-perbs or emergency position indicating radio beacons are a safety device used to alert the coast guard that a vessel is in distress. In practice they're often set off accidentally, especially in winter when crews are knocking ice off their boats. Proud had been in the wheelhouse with the radio turned on and he hadn't heard the destination call for help. They probably don't even know their e-perb is going off, he thought, and went back to plotting a course for the fishing grounds.
