In a new paper, researchers explored people's ability to improve on a very simple motor sequence. They measured their speed and accuracy in the real world before they did practice sessions that were either intentional or mental. Mental training enhanced the net excitation of cerebellum-to-motor cortical communication. That is, it reduced the inhibition in a way that allowed motor cortex to generate these movements with more accuracy and more speed.
