Fishermen were considered on the low rung of society. People were still eating turtle and or knew somebody who was, or had a brother an uncle who was hunting turtles. The fact that jay could say he'd eaten turtle, that he'd been willing to partake and not just judge the culture he was trying to shift helped him make his case.
