Do You Believe in a Fairness Doctrine?
There's this widespread discomfort, especially among the sort of highbrow people who cite Cronkite with this notion that media outlets might be explicitly partisan. I think you and I both made clear we don't believe in a fairness doctrine, but what could be done? It's interesting. That phrase, fair and balanced slogan for Fox News for a while, somewhat ironically. But that concept is core to this post 1970s conception of journalism as a fourth estate. And so if anything we're seeingMedia kind of reverting to its expected mean throughout American history.
