Activist investors pressure the company and they brought in a new CEO. The idea was that if you don't have to pay for the brands, you can be even lower cost. That backfired dramatically because loyal Bitbath and Beyond customers didn't see any of the brands at an unusual price point. Once the brands were gone, essentially sales declined very quickly.
