Teaching Will Never Be a Research-Based Profession

In a talk at ResearchEd in 2017, you said teaching will never be a research-based profession. Have your views changed since then? What is it so difficult about creating a research basis for what works to coin a phrase in teaching? Every hour that teachers spend doing one thing is an hour they don't have to spend on something else. I've come to the conclusion that opportunity cost is the single most important concept in educational improvement. It's almost a kind of mathematical point. For example, we now know that teachers with more subject knowledge are slightly more effective, but that's not relevant. The question is how do you get teachers more subject knowledge?"
