The City of God: A History of Rome's Civil Religion
Augustine's prosecution of pride and defensive humility moved from the political to the philosophic realm. He argues that superior happiness is to be had through moderation and humility for rulers and life. Augustine surveys and offers appreciative critiques of these figures lives and works in book six and seven. The perception of civil religion, Augustine sees bound up with political and unjust inequalities and oppression forms of tyranny. In books one through five Augustine presents pride as opposed to truth and nature.
