Viruses start in the fossil record very consistently around 3.5 billion years ago. They look to be extremely critical in the development of multicellular life on Earth. The human genome has now been shown to be at least 50% the result of direct viral insertion into the genetic code, which I find fascinating. If these viruses were against us, if it was possible that viruses would jump up and kill a human being, we would have never developed on the planet.
