The Holy Roman Empire

When Charlemagne was crowned emperor, he was simply crowned the head of the quote Roman Empire. The term Holy Roman Empire wasn't used until the 13th century. In 1512, the official term became the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. It survived until 1806 when Napoleon managed to defeat the emperor Francis II and dissolved it as an institution.
