The War of Independence
Israel from the beginning felt itself to be very, very thin. David Ben-Gurion declared independence in May of 1948 aware that his country is among the smallest on earth. The Jewish state of Israel was tiny and could have lost. It could have been wiped out. That's guts and valor, no question. And a lot of that was intelligence work and covert work by the pre-Israel underground.
