How Slime Molds Solve the Traveling Salesman Problem

Slime molds are strange unicellular little critters somewhere between fungi and and algae they don't really fit into the established categories we have for other species. A few years ago some researchers at the University of Tokyo made a little sort of petri dish arrangement with oat flakes resembling oat flakes which the slime molds like to eat. Within 24 hours this slime mold had basically recreated very clearly the pattern of the tokyo metro system.
