I Don't Blame Ulamah Per Se

Early Muslims were very open-minded about the Quran translation. In 1729, finally an Ottoman bureaucrat convinced the Sultan and the Gram-visir to get a permission for a single printing press in Istanbul. The Ulamah issued a fatwa saying that you can only print non-religious books. But all the books taught in schools were religious. That's why in the late 18th century, Ottomans printed only 50,000 booksFinally after 300 years after printing started.
