The Tanzimat Reforms of the Ottoman Empire
The late Ottoman Empire is the inheritor of a series of major reforms known as the Tanzimat from 1839 to 1876. The purpose was to modernize the state and create a centralized, effective state that started to intrude into people's lives in ways never seen before. Michael: How do we keep this state together? How does it survive? And increasingly the Ottomans are faced with modern Western armies on the battlefield with industrializing societies they just can't compete with.
