I think people contend to be absessive about ballard. I can't really think of another writer who inspires so many wildly different interpretations. The man is a mass of contradictions. He was born in shanghai, but he's supposed to be english. A central crox of the book is trying to explore that equation. Why are people so protective of their viewpoint of what ballad is about?
