William and his army were ravaging the south. The outright slaughter of peasants was often interpreted by holy men as an expression of god's righteous wrath. This could explain why there doesn't appear to have been a coronation. It could be evidenced that the bishops were dragging their feet on the one aspect that they had control over. And perhaps they are trying to avoid further irritating big jay by backing the wrong horse. But fancy oil or not, Edgar in the end, was still selected king.
