CNN's John Defterios asks why we pursued the policy of engagement with China for so long. He says it was a gamble, and we were hoping that things would go in a certain direction. We kept doubling down on that bet even as evidence accumulated that it was not paying off, he writes. But if we had been more alert and been able to modulate our policies, "we could have avoided getting into quite the deep hole" said Defterios.
