The idea that you are the author of what happens to you has been sort of, it's moved across the gender barrier. That can be seen as a form of progress, but it also means that this model of masculinity was profoundly problematic. And gradually we've been moving in the direction where not only is it acceptable to have a massively inflated sense of yourself and your powers, such that you might not have grown up much since you were four years old.
