For the last several years, america had been well working. The united states had been constructing a model society built on reason and natural law. But primarily, the explosion of ideas was because of what was happening across the atlantic. America was a living, tangible example of an alternative way of doing things. And it was an example which stood in significant contrast to the societies of the old world. As the actions and scandals of the aristocracy dominated the french press, American must have acted like a light beaming and enlightened path for all to follow.
