The Impact of Bono on AIDS Orphans
How did Bono bring evangelicals along? AIDS was perceived as a gay person's disease back in the day. In Africa, it was becoming a women's disease because of an anatomical reality associated with HIV that makes it easier for women to be infected than for men. He got George W. Bush on board; he got Jesse Helms and other conservative members of American Congress on board. PEPFAR has saved 20 million lives due to Bono's work,. Bobby Schriver was super involved in that and an architect of it in many ways.
