An object found in a ditch at the Vindalanda Roman Fort in Northern England. It had initially been catalogued as a darning tool but new research suggests that it was actually a wooden phallus. This is big news because it's the first phallic object of its type found from the Roman era. The authors of this paper give us three possibilities: A penis inserted into and out of another statue, or a pestle to grind up your food.
