I always teach the concrete before the abstract. And I definitely agree with what you said on reading words that are not even in their oral language yet. We have made an assumption about a child's background knowledge. So many learners that I see have way higher reading fluency than they have reading comprehension. It's kind of like, well, what's the point? You know, we if we're not comprehending the text, what are we doing?"
