The Importance of Ideological Belief in Mass Killings

Do we know if most people who participate in mass killings are really true believers? Most, I would say, act from a bigger mix of motives. In those mix of motives, ideology is still there. It's still very important, but it's not usually the kind of deep belief of the true believer. There are many other people who get influenced by ideologies, even though they may not match our kind of stereotype of the fanatical true believer.
